Benjamin might join Bulls

Trevor Benjamin could be the next player to be signed by Graham Turner if speculation is correct.

Benjamin, picture from the BBC, has been released by Peterborough by mutual consent after two seasons with the club. The front man scored eight times in 47 League games.

"Trevor has been with us for two seasons and we wish him the best of luck in his career. We thank him for his service. I think he will be signing for Hereford United in the next few days," said Peterborough director Barry Fry.

Welingborough born Benjamin is 29. He started his career as a trainee with Cambridge and moved onto Leicester in summer 2000 where he spent five years. However during that time he was loaned out to six different clubs. He was released in January 2005 and joined Northampton. However he was only there one month before moving on again. Eventually he joined Peterborough in time for the 2005/06 season where he has been based until yesterday.

Whilst with Posh he was loaned out to several clubs including Walsall late last season.

Bulls supporters may remember Benjamin and Dean Beckwith clashing in the League game at the Bescot in April when Beckwith was, probably unfairly, dismissed.

"The game hanged on the referee's decision with the sending off. I thought that it was Trevor Benjamin who committed the foul in the first place and then to rub salt in the wounds, our lad gets sent off," said Graham Turner at the time.

UPDATE 10am: Interest in Benjamin confirmed by Hereford United's official site. They report that he may play this evening against Wolves.

Put your thoughts into Talking Bull

Talking Bull is still looking for a few more articles for its 99th edition. Anyone with an interesting story or point of view might get it published in the next T B which is due out shortly. Send your thoughts to either Peter Povall and/or Chris Jones as soon as possible.

Meanwhile B E S T, Bulls Exiled Supporters Together, has extended the deadline for membership for this season until August 24th to take account of supporters who may currently be on holiday.

Membership of B E S T costs £15, of which £10 goes straight to Hereford United for enrolment into the club's official membership scheme. The balance is for administrative purposes, and ultimately, they hope to be able to sponsor a match or match-ball at Edgar Street. If you would like to join or renew your membership, please e-mail Chris Jones on zebemach@ukonline.co.uk for an application form.

Lionel Ainsworth - A short profile

Lionel Ainsworth, pictured, signed for Hereford United earlier today. He will wear the number seven shirt.

Ainsworth was born in Nottingham and will be 20 on October 1st. Just 5ft 9in and weighing under 10 stone, Ainsworth joined Derby County when 17. He was named as their academy player of the year and also top scorer in 2005. He signed his first contract with the Rams in August 2005. However he dislocated his shoulder and that injury slowed his progress towards breaking into the first team squad.

Eventually he made his first team debut against Plymouth in February 2006.

Last season he went out on loan to three different clubs last season, Bournemouth, Halifax Town and Wycombe Wanderers where he spent three months.

Wycombe coach Steve Brown said that as Ainsworth had become available they would take him on.

"He has a good pedigree and has enjoyed a good early part of his career."

He made five starts for Wycombe.

Ainsworth has also represented England at Under-17 and Under-19 level.

Few 'Names' Left For Wolves Friendly

Wolves have named their squad travelling to Northampton for tonight's match, with the travelling party leaving few 'name' players for tomorrow's trip to Edgar Street.

With none of the players expected to pull 'double duty' only a handful of the more youthful members of the first team squad are expected to be making the trip.

For the Bulls, Chris Zebroski's departure is expected to be filled by at least one new triallist striker with Theo Robinson hopefully on show following treatment on a knee injury.

Zebroski Joins Torquay

Bulls triallist Chris Zebroski has been unveiled as a loan signing by Torquay United.

The Millwall striker had been at Edgar Street after he was effectively told his Lions career was over by boss Willie Donachie, however he has apparently failed to impress Graham Turner sufficiently to warrant the loan deal.

A Torquay statement claims Zebroski has rejected the chance to sign for the Gulls permanently, suggesting he may be on the lookout for a swift return to the league when the loan expires in January.

Ainsworth Signing Confirmed

Hereford United have confirmed the signing of former Derby winger Lionel Ainsworth.

The 20 year old left Pride Park in the summer after two years as a pro amassing a total of 20 appearances, mainly during loan spells at Bournemouth, Halifax, and Wycombe last season.

His signing brings the total of contracted players to 15, but no details on contract length have been released.

Meanwhile, Forest Green's proposed friendly with Westfields on Thursday has been cancelled due to flooding of the pitch leaving it unplayable. Forest Green will now go to Pegasus' Old School Lane ground that night, with a 6pm kick off.

Torquay look forward to return to League

They may just have been relegated from League Two and had a change of ownership, but Torquay United look to be doing everything possible to keep their club alive and kicking. They don't want it to be nine years in the Conference as it was for Hereford United.

This afternoon Soccer AM's Helen Chamberlain paid the club a visit. She's admits to being a Gulls fan and was pictured modelling a home top with a scarf bearing the slogan we'll be back.

"It's so true what friends of mine, who support Barnet and Doncaster Rovers have said to me, that you have to take a step backwards before you can move forwards. Both of those sides were relegated and came back again. There just seems to be such an air of positivity around the club and I just can't wait for the new season. I can't wait to meet all the new players, and I think we are going to have an eye opener of a season!" said Chamberlain.

Meanwhile striker Chris Zebroski has joined the Gulls from Milwall on loan until January. Zebroski had been on trial at Hereford. They have also signed Tim Sills, recently released by Hereford.

Meadow End Open For Friendlies

Hereford United have confirmed that the Meadow End will be open for both the remaining home friendlies.

Scheduled drainage work has been moved around to accomodate the fans. The club have also confirmed that Saturday's friendly with Cheltenham will retain the same pricing structure of £8 for adults and £4 for concessions throughout the ground.

News Round Up

Shrewsbury have signed defender Colin Murdock on a 12 month deal after a successful trial. The Northern Ireland international was released by Rotherham in the summer after not making a first team appearance since December.

Notts County are to investigate on-pitch crowd trouble following last night's friendly loss to Nottm Forest. Up to 200 'fans' from both sides encroached onto the playing surface. Alex Jeannin scored a late consolation goal as Oxford went down 2-1 to Luton.

Chester are negotiating a player exchange with Northwich, sending striker Lee Steele to the Vics in exchange for midfielder Carlos Roca. Tamika Mkandawire will wear no.5 for Leyton Orient in the coming season.

It's four years since Wolves last came to Edgar Street

It's four years since Wolverhampton Wanderers last played a friendly at Edgar Street - they visit again tomorrow. The game took place on a very warm Monday evening in the middle of July 2003 in front of 1895 spectators which included 234 away fans.

It was the first of three friendlies for Hereford United against the big three West Midlands clubs as West Brom and Birmingham were to visit in the next couple of weeks.

The game was drawn 1-1 with Rob Purdie, playing up-front, scoring for the Bulls and Adam Proudlock for Wolves. The Wolves squad had been spilt for the fixture as they had another friendly at Bristol Rovers the same evening.

The Hereford team that evening was Matt Baker, Gethin Jones, Rob Sawyers, Jamie Pitman, Andy Tretton, Tony James, Danny Williams, Michael Rose, David Brown, Rob Purdie, Paul Parry.

Subs: Richard Teesdale, Lee Kendal, Dean Craven, Danny Bertram, Kevin Gwillam and Danny Moon.

Steve Guinan, one of the only two Hereford United player from that era with the club today, missed the game because of a knee injury. Ben Smith, the other player, missed out with a ankle knock.

Dave Jones, now with Cardiff City, was the Wolves manager at the time. He watched the game whilst one of his coaches, ex-Bull Keith Downing, was on the touchline.

Trio Shortlisted For ESG

A trio of companies have been shortlisted to redevelop the Edgar Street Grid.

Centros Miller, Modus, and Stanhope PLC have been named as the preferred bidders for the site, with proposals to be heard from each company in November.

Centros Miller, with 40 years of development behind them, have completed ten similar 'regeneration' schemes in the last ten years notably in Kidderminster and Boston, where both won several awards. They are currently working on a number of schemes including a million square foot development in Portsmouth.

Modus are responsible for the £120million Grand Arcade in Wigan. They boast a 15 year history in redevelopment, but have nothing that is near the size of the ESG. They were named Developer of the Year at a recent industry awards.

Stanhope PLC are currently redesigning Stevenage and Bracknell over two sites totalling the size of the ESG but have mainly been responsible for the redevelopment of old office blocks mainly in London and the South East.

Travis to join Nuneaton?

Former Bulls wing-back Simon Travis appears to be on the verge of joining Conference North outfit Nuneaton Borough. Travis featured in Boro's victory over Leamington Spa over the weekend, and manager Kevin Wilkin is looking for Travis to join in the coming days.

"Simon hasn't actually signed although we are pretty close. He needs one or two games to get fully fit but will certainly be a valuable asset as he can play in numerous positions" commented Wilkin to IcCoventry.

The news will come as a surprise to United fans who saw Travis hold his own in League Two last season, but will now face the likes of Redditch and Worcester if he makes the move permanent which is looking likely.

Travis has been rumoured to be on trial at Oxford, and was also attracting interest from Torquay and League Two side Stockport.

Which Bulls fans answered this survey?

Another football 'survey' has taken place and Hereford United haven't come out of it too well.

Barclaycard have surveyed supporters of every club in the country. They asked them where they thought their team would finish this coming season in their respective Leagues.

In League Two Peterborough came out top with their fans boasting about the clubs spending power. Hereford United came 21st out of the 24 teams.

So, own up those supporters who were so negative about the Bulls. Who are you?

For the record here is the League Two 'Fans Optimism' list:

1 Peterborough, 2 Rochdale, 3 Shrewsbury, 4 Bradford City, 5 MK Dons, 6 Chester, 7 Stockport, 8 Wrexham, 9 Morecambe, 10 Accrington, 11 Notts County, 12 Darlington, 13 Wycombe, 14 Dagenham & R, 15 Chesterfield, 16 Grimsby, 17 Rotherham, 18 Lincoln, 19 Bury, 20 Brentford, 21 Hereford, 22 Macclesfield, 23 Barnet, and 24 Mansfield.

In the other Leagues Manchester United, Wolves and Swansea topped the survey.

News Round Up

Mansfield will start the season without worries after the local safety committee agreed to raise the capacity at Field Mill over the required 5,000 capacity. The club had seen their capacity slashed in half to just 4,684 following stewarding problems at the end of last season, and will still operate with a capacity still over 3,000 short of the maximum until they can demonstrate that all the issues have been resolved.

Chester have confirmed the signing of former Accrington man Tony Grant on a 12 month deal. Lincoln have missed out on former Yeovil defender Anthony Tonkin after he rejected their 2 year contract offer to join Forest Green and be nearer to his West Country home.

Boston have signed seven players in their attempts to rebuild the team. Among them is midfielder Ashley Nicholls, notable to Bulls fans as being 'the one the got away' - prompting Graham Turner to start using aliases for triallists in friendly matches. Grimsby have had a bid for Hull striker Michael Bridges rejected.

Former Chester centre-half Cortez Belle is on trial at Halifax Town. He played for the Bulls in the friendly at Pegasus. Barnet have signed former Watford utility man Stephane Seanla on a one year deal after a successful trial. Morecambe have resigned goalkeeper Scott Davies to a new 12 month deal, effectively ending their interest in ex-Bull Matt Baker.

Darlington have signed Ipswich defender Ian Miller on loan for a second time. The 23 year old joined them last season for a seven game spell, and has joined for a month that could be extended until January. Bradford have given former Sheff Utd midfielder Kyle Nix a month to month contract.

Giant striker Fola Onibuje is to trial at Shrewsbury following his release by Wycombe. Shews boss Gary Peters apparently tried to sign the goalpost on loan prior to his release. Cheltenham have had to cancel their home friendly with Leicester due to the water problems in Gloucestershire. The cancellation means that the Robins will not have played a single game on the Whaddon Road pitch prior to the start of the season.

Mowbray Unhappy Despite Win

West Brom boss Tony Mowbray was unhappy about his team's performance at Edgar Street on Friday.

Quoted by the Birmingham Mail, with the paper noting: "Mowbray was less enthused about his team's performance against a poor Hereford side", Mowbray told the press: "Overall there were some positives with our performance and a lot of negatives too. There were a lot of young players out there who got experience playing with our first-team players.

"People can gauge by my reaction that it's not the standard I want our teams to play at. They know the standards they have to attain. It wasn't as fluid as it was at Northampton but then that might reflect the youthfulness of the squad. It's not all about fitness. I want them to be footballers, express themselves. The result might not matter but they are being judged every time they go out on the pitch."

Graham Turner, speaking to the Offical Site, was happier: "It was a good workout, I thought we did quite well first half."

"We got caught a little bit sloppy just after half time. They changed their system, upped the tempo a bit. It was hard work against some quite reasonable players."

Lawrence Moves On

Lawrence Appleby, the former Bulls kitman who would make 550 mile round trips to Edgar Street for match days, has joined Bedlington Terriers as their Secretary.

Despite living, and working full time, in Newcastle Lawrence would travel the country to meet the team coach on away days and rarely missed a match for the Bulls during a long association with the club. He had also played for the club - once, for a 'few seconds' - in a friendly at Newcastle Town after Ian Bowyer named him on the bench.

He had previously been Secretary at Gateshead, and also had a spell as Manager and Chairman at Darlington Cleveland in the Teeside League five years before Graham Turner took over similar roles at the Bulls.

Forest Green to help Gloucester

Forest Green Rovers are the second local club to help flood striken Gloucester City.

They have agreed to host next Saturday's friendly against Gloucester City, which was to have been played at the Tigers' Meadow Park. Gloucester's ground has been badly hit by flooding, so Forest Green have kindly agreed for the friendly to be played at the New Lawn.

Forest Green will be making a donation to Gloucester's fund to try to help them back on their feet. A bucket collection will take place during the match to add to the donation being made.

They are the second club to help Gloucester. Bath City gave them the proceeds, after expenses, of their friendly against the Tigers.

Plenty of Football for Bulls fans this week

With the start of the League Two season getting closer there is plenty of football to wet the appetite of Hereford United supporters this week even if a couple of the games involve Forest Green Rovers.

Tomorrow, Tuesday, supporters who are able to travel to Morecambe can watch Forest Green Rovers take on Preston North End. This is a Testimonial match for Jimmy Harvey, the much-loved former Hereford United player, who was manager at Morecambe until recently. Kick-off 7.30pm.

On Wednesday Hereford United play their fourth pre-season friendly. Wolverhampton Wanderers are the visitors to Edgar Street. Kick-off is at 7.45pm and admission is £8 for adults and £4 for concessions in any part of the ground which is open. Please remember the no smoking rule.

On Thursday the Hereford United youth team are due to play a friendly just over the Welsh border at Presteigne. Kick-off is at 7.30pm.

Also that evening Forest Green Rovers travel to play Hereford United's nearest neighbours, Westfields of the Polymac Services Midland Alliance League. Kick-off 7.45pm. Supporters will remember that Westfields had a fire at the end of last season which caused considerable damage to their stand so it would be a nice gesture if some Bulls fans could go along and watch this game. It will also give fans the chance to see how former Bulls Jamie Pitman, Danny Carey-Bertram and Stuart Fleetwood are progressing.

Finally on Saturday Hereford United play their last pre-season friendly. Cheltenham Town are the visitors to Edgar Street for the 3pm start. As it will be just seven days before League matches commence, Graham Turner is likely to put out his strongest side available on the day. Admission prices for this game have not been confirmed but are expected to be £8 for adults and £4 for concessions.

Willo wants to score on his birthday

Former Hereford United striker Andy Williams has never scored a goal on his birthday but is hoping he will get the chance next month with Bristol Rovers. The game is against Crystal Palace in the Carling Cup.

"My birthday falls on the day of that game, and it would be nice to get on and score," he told the official Bristol Rovers website

"So far in my career, there have been two games on my birthday, but I've never actually got on to the pitch in either of them. Hopefully, that will change this year."

In a long interview Willo reveals he was disappointed with the way he has played so far.

"I was a little bit disappointed with the way I played, and I'm hoping to impress a little bit more than I have done so far, but it's going to take time to settle in and get up to full match fitness. Hopefully, with the more games I play, the better I will be and the more I'll start showing people what I can do."

Willo has just returned from a club tour of Scotland.

"It's all a new experience for me but everything has gone well so far. I'm really enjoying myself and I hope that continues. All the lads have been good to me and made me feel very welcome.

"I feel much fitter than I ever have already and I'm looking forward to improving as a player.

"The training here has been a little bit different to what I've been used to in the past. We did a lot more running at the start of pre season, along with more stretching and dynamic work, which has been good, and I've benefited a lot from that."

Willo contrasted Edgar Street's open days with the one that has just taken place at the Memorial Stadium.

"We had open days at Hereford, but I guess there were three times as many people at the Memorial Stadium than there were at Edgar Street. It was unbelievable, and it was nice to meet so many supporters, and they gave me a great welcome.

"I played against Rovers, at the Memorial Stadium, last season and the fans were brilliant then. I remember that, with a minute to go, it was obvious that Rovers were going to win and the noise they made was unbelievable. I'm really looking forward to playing in front of such passionate fans."

Nowhere to light up at Edgar Street

With the signs up, and the stewards briefed, the Smoking Ban at Edgar Street came into effect at last Friday's friendly.

Whilst the vast majority will cope with 105 or more minutes of abstinence, those who can't might be looking for a hiding place for a quick ciggy. But where will they go as Hereford United have followed the Football League request in full.

PLEASE NOTE THAT EDGAR STREET IS A NON-SMOKING STADIUM. IT IS AGAINST THE LAW TO SMOKE WHILST IN THE FOOTBALL STADIUM, INCLUDING THE VICE PRESIDENTS CLUB, CLUB SHOP AND LEGENDS.

So in theory there is nowhere to have a smoke other than outside the ground. But it is highly unlikely that someone in desparate need will be allowed out and back in during a game.

Perhaps it will make some supporters pack up smoking for good, but it might make one or two individuals wary about coming to the ground without somewhere to light up.

Help could be at hand if smokers can wait long enough. Before the proposals for the two new ends of Edgar Street are finally agreed, perhaps thought could be given to a small 'outdoor' area which could be provided for smokers.

Meanwhile the absence of the aroma of smoke, even when it's stale, does mask other aromas. As one supporter put it, the club may need to review its 'fresh air' policy in certain areas.

Fans Forum on August 6th

A fans forum for Hereford United supporters is to be held at Legends on Monday August 6th kick-off at 7pm.

Graham Turner will be in attendance.

Also HUISA are to hold their AGM at the Richmond Club on Saturday August 11th at 12 noon.

Meantime Karl Lewis, who kept goal for Hereford United in the second half of Friday's friendly against West Brom, is now with Bromsgrove on a three year deal. However it was agreed that Lewis could train with the Bulls and be 'on-call' if needed.

Lewis was a product of the West Brom youth set-up.

Finally former Hereford United player Gavin Williams wants to stay at Ipswich despite recent rumours of a rift between him and the club.

"I have always maintained that I am happy at Ipswich, and I want to get fully match fit and then sit down and discuss signing a new contract.

"My current one runs out in 2009 and I would be delighted if I could extend it to say, 2012."

Collin to keep goal for Workington tomorrow

It has been confirmed that the young goalkeeper on trial at Hereford United has returned to Workington.

Adam Collin played some part in both the friendlies at Pegasus and Bath.

He is due to play for Workington tomorrow against Dunston.

Meanwhile speculation that Alistair John, the 19 year old winger who played part of last night's game at Edgar Street for Hereford United, was to play for Gillingham against Charlton this afternoon was incorrect. John was not even in the Gills squad.

Better than last year at this stage

Last night's friendly against West Bromwich Albion must have given hope both to the club and those who watched the game that Graham Turner is in the process of putting together a squad with much more potential than last seasons squad.

Whilst there are only 14 players signed on to date, and that includes several youngsters, the quality of the trialists on show gives hope that deals can be done with several of them.

Those signed up are: Wayne Brown, Trent McClenahan, Richard Rose, John McCombe, Karl Broadhurst, Ben Smith, Steve Guinan, Kris Taylor, Clint Easton, Sam Gwynne, Jordan Fitzpatrick, Marcus Palmer, Luke Webb and Dean Beckwith.

The principle trialists have been: Joey Hutchinson, Alistair John, Chris Zebroski, Lionel Ainsworth, Simon Johnson and, assuming he returns after his injury, Theo Robinson.

The squad still needs a reserve goalkeeper. Whether Turner will opt for youngster Karl Lewis remains to be seen. Lewis has worked with the squad for several seasons, but he might not be quite ready should Wayne Brown be unavailable for any reason. Last season both Brown and sub-goalie Thompson were both injured early in the season and Turner had to bring in several goalkeepers as cover.

Trent McClenhan, who usually plays right back, is expected to be missing for several games this autumn assuming he is called into the Australian squad for their Olympic matches. Cover is needed in this position and, of the players seen so far, it is difficult to see who that might be. Richard Rose has played at left back.

Whilst the squad has several players who can be central defenders, Beckwith, McCombe, Broadhurst and, should he sign, Hutchinson, and also midfielders, Smith, Taylor, even Sam Gwynne, Turner may still be pondering who to play in the left wing spot. Clint Easton played there in the first half and Luke Webb was tried there in the second period doubtless because he may be pushed out of a regular place in midfield. Easton looks the obvious choice although he could play left back instead of Rose if need be.

The right wing is uncertain as yet. Both Lionel Ainsworth and Alastair John played last night and should one, or better both, be available that position would easily be solved.

However it's in front of goal where although five trialist strikers have been tried, none has really stood out. Simon Johnson, who scored at Bath, and Chris Zebroski were given another chance last night. Steve Guinan needs a partner. The fact that Turner wants another look at Theo Robinson could mean that he's uncertain as to whom to offer a contract.

It wouldn't be a surprise if another couple of trialists appear at Edgar Street this coming week. Maybe they will play some part in procedings against Wolves on Wednesday evening.

Meanwhile the reseeded pitch at Edgar Street looked excellent last night. Last season there was criticism that the state of the pitch didn't help Hereford's style of play. That excuse probably won't be heard this time.

No Collin this evening

Workington goalkeeper Adam Collin did not take part in the friendly this evening at Edgar Street. It is presumed he has not impressed Graham Turner enough to earn a contract and so has returned north. Workington wanted a fee for Collin.

There was one trialist previously unseen who played this evening. Alister John, a 19 year old stocky right-winger with a little bit of trickery, played for around 60 minutes before being replaced by Lionel Ainsworth who has featured in all three friendlies.

John, pictured, comes from Charlton. He is also beleived to be having a trial at Gillingham.

Out of the new players already signed, Kris Taylor appeared very competent in midfield when he came on and Clint Easton, who can play in midfield or central defence, also looks a useful addition.

Of the unsigned trialists one in particular who had a good spell was defender Joey Hutchinson, first seen at Bath last Tuesday.

Baggies Overcome Bulls

West Brom showed their class to defeat Hereford tonight in a closely contested game. Second half strikes from Darren Carter and Sherjill MacDonald were enough for last seasons Championship play-off finalists to overcome The Bulls, who once again, had a mixture of trialists and first team players on show.

Defender Joey Hutchinson started after his second half appearence at Bath whilst Sam Gwynne partnered Ben Smith in midfield. There was a first start for recent signing Clint Easton on the left wing, with the right wing being occupied by trialist Alastair John from Charlton. West Brom lined up with many familiar footballing names including new signing Leon Barnett, Darren Carter and Nathan Ellington.

Within the first minute, Hereford could have been in front. John paced down the right wing, before his cross caught Baggie's 'keeper Luke Daniels off guard and the ball struck the bar. Easton followed up but his effort was blocked. Minutes later, Easton struck a long range shot into the arms of Daniels, before Chaplow tried his luck at the other end, but his long-range effort failed to trouble Wayne Brown. Both sides passed the ball around nicely, on the impressive Edgar Street pitch, but few chances were created, with both defences dominant.

Towards the end of the half though, Steve Guinan came close on two seperate occasions. It was John again down the right wing who created the opportunity, with a low cross, and Guinan swivelled to powerfully shoot, but Daniels made a good reaction save to keep the ball out. Then came Guinan's second chance, this time it was Smith who provided the cross and Guinan headed narrowly over the bar from six yards.

The second half saw a change of goalkeepers for both sides, with Daniels replaced by Luke Steele for The Baggies, and Karl Lewis took the place of Brown for United. Early on, MacDonald raced down the left wing before cutting in and striking goalwards, but Lewis got his fingertips to it to divert the shot onto the post. Then Lewis made another decent save, this time tipping an Ellington toe-poke out for a corner. However, Lewis could do nothing about the opener for West Brom, Carter was given too much room outside the area, and he turned, and struck a right hand shot into the far corner, much to the delight of the 400 or so Baggies fans.

Graham Turner took the decision to make changes soon after the goal, with John McCombe, Kris Taylor, Luke Webb and Simon Johnson taking the places of Joey Hutchinson, Ben Smith, Clint Easton and Steve Guinan respectively. However, concentration was lost from these changes and immediately after the substitutes, West Brom scored again. A long ball over the top was not dealt with by McCombe, and MacDonald raced clear and slid the ball past Lewis and into the net. Hereford responded to the goal well, and were nearly rewarded with a goal after the best move of the match. Taylor played a fantastic through ball to Johnson up front, who had the vision to play in Webb, but his shot was superbly kept out by West Brom goalie Steele. Before Steele had the chance to get back into position, Taylor set himself up superbly and volleyed inches wide from 20 yards, with Steele seemingly beaten. Marcus Palmer, Jordan Fitzpatrick and Lionel Ainsworth were given short appearences late on replacing Steve Guinan, Sam Gwynne and Alastair John but all three had little time to impress. Taylor tried his luck on a couple of occasions for Hereford, narrowly missing with some good efforts, whilst in the last minute, Ellington curled a free-kick over the bar.

Tonight was a sterner test for Hereford, and in the end, the quality of the oppostion was too much for United. Richard Rose again had a very solid game at left-back, a position the former Gillingham man will no doubt be looking to make his own. Also impressing were trialist Hutchinson in the centre of defence, and in the second half, midfielder Taylor, who looked to be the creative spark for Hereford, whilst also having an eye for goal. An attendance of 1405 saw the friendly.

Hereford: Brown, McClenahan, Hutchinson, Broadhurst, Rose, John, Smith, Gwynne, Easton, Guinan, Zebroski.

Subs: Lewis, McCombe, Taylor, Webb, Ainsworth, Fitzpatrick, Johnson, Palmer, Trialist Number 19

West Brom: Daniels, Albrechtsen, Mason, Wallwork, Barnett, Chaplow, Worrell, Carter, MacDonald, Ellington, Nicholson.

Baggies Beat Bulls

West Brom beat the Bulls 2-0 in today's friendly at Edgar Street.

The Bulls again fielded a number of triallists alongside the signed players. Dean Beckwith was again absent, but Ben Smith made an influential return. The gate of 1,407 was healthy, with over 400 from West Brom.

Full report later.

Meadow End open this evening

The Meadow End will be open this evening according to the club.

Late in the day, they have reported that work on the sewers has not taken place today. Gates 20 and 21 can be used.

The information was posted on the OF at 6.19pm. Bit late for most supporters.

Bradford Tickets Sales Exceed 10,000

Following a major marketing push and price reduction, League 2 newcomers Bradford City have now seen their season ticket sales for the coming season top 10,000. With adult costs below £140 and even allowing for a good percentage of youth tickets the pre-season revenues look to have exceeded £1 million. Joint Chairman Julian Rhodes said: - "We've still got the best part of a week to go and we need to push on now towards the 11,000 or even 12,000 mark." The Bradford ticket office is open 6 days a week from 9.00 'till 5.00 and from 10.00 'till 4.00 on a Sunday. With virtually guaranteed attendances the Bantams are looking forward to increased income from their catering and merchandise outlets.

Despite the success of the Bradford budget scheme, Exeter City have not announced plans to offer 25 year tickets in exchange for a box of loaves and fishes.

Mowbray talks about the Hereford friendly

Tony Mowbray has been telling the press of his plans for this evening's friendly at Edgar Street.

Nathan (Duke) Ellington is expected to partner Sherjill MacDonald.

"Nathan has shown a great attitude and application to his training in pre-season," said the Albion manager.

"He'll get 90 minutes tonight and he's got to go out there and give it his best shot so that he'll have a fair chance of playing at Bristol Rovers on Tuesday, the club he started at and played for.

"He could play a big part in that game, the ball is in his court and we're looking for him to score which we know he can do."

"Nobody who played on Wednesday at Northampton will play at Hereford. It will be a completely different 11 tonight and we'll see how we go.

"It's about getting the players fit, which is why everyone played the full 90 minutes on Wednesday and if we don't get any knocks or injuries tonight then they'll play 90 mins as well."

News Round Up

West Brom have added newly signed former Luton defender Leon Barnett to their squad for tonight's friendly. The £2.5million signing was Luton's player of the year last season.

Wycombe have released striker Fola Onibuje after a disappointing time at the club. The 6ft 7in giant failed to impress after a surprise move to Adams Park. The club have also released Leon Crooks, who is on trial at MK Dons, but have signed Tom Williams on a two year deal from Swansea.

Macclesfield have signed Terry Dunfield after a successful trial. The former Bury midfielder was released by the Shakers in the summer. Lincoln have signed former Grimsby full back Gary Croft. The 33 year old has signed a one year deal and is their second summer signing, after 36 year old forward Steve Torpey.

Bradford have signed Barnsley striker Nathan Joynes on loan for six months. He has previous League Two experience with Boston last season, and is the third Barnsley player to join the Bantams on loan.

Workington await news on Collin

Workington Town are awaiting news from Hereford United about their goalkeeper Adam Collin who is on trial at Edgar Street.

Collin is into his second week at Hereford and his manager Tommy Cassidy is hoping for some news from Graham Turner as to whether he will offer Collin a contract. Should he do so a transfer fee would be required.

Collin is likely to feature for the Bulls this evening.

Meanwhile West Brom are expected to give new signing Leon Barnett an Albion debut in tonight's friendly against Hereford after completing his switch from Luton.

Supporters are reminded that the Meadow End will be closed this evening because of repairs.

Former Bulls score for Forest Green

Two former Hereford United players scored for Forest Green Rovers in their 4-1 victory over Championship team Bristol City this evening.

In the first half Danny Carey-Bertram got himself on the score sheet and then late in the game Stuart Fleetwood scored.

Bristol City had sent a strong team, although without former Bull Michael McIndoe, to the Lawn and must be disappointed with the result. Their reporter at the game said it was a 'shocking scoreline'.

Forest Green supporters seem pleased with the arrival of Fleetwood. One said that he looked a 'great addition' to the squad. Another commented he had 'never seen as much pace in the conference'.

Forest Green Rovers are due to travel to Wesfields next Thursday evening 2nd August for another friendly. The kick-off is at 7.45pm.

Herefordshire Football Association Meeting

A little bit of history from the Hereford Journal which was published on Saturday January 8th 1910 at the Offices in Offa Street, Hereford.

Herefordshire Football Association Meeting

The monthly meeting was held on Monday at the Hop Pole Hotel, Hereford.

Tenbury Town protested against the match against Leominster Constitutional standing, on the ground that Cup Rules Nos 17 and 19 were not carried out. The match was ordered to be replayed at Tenbury on or before January 15th. Kick-off at 2.30pm.

Referee Kirk reported that tghe Junior Cup match, Tram Inn v Birch United, was stopped owing to balls bursting. The match was ordered to be replayed at tram Inn on January 8th. Kick-off at 2.30pm.

With regard to the Llanbradach v Cardiff Corinthians match in the second round of the Challenge Cup, it should have been played on December 27th, but through a misunderstanding there was no ball available until the visiting team had left the field. The match was ordered to be replayed at Llanbradach on or before January 15th.

Kingsland Cup draw resulted as follows: Presteign v Kington Town, Lyonshall v Kingsland United.

A report was read from Referee Kidd of Norton Barracks re the conduct of spectators at a Worcester League match on the Hereford City Club's ground on December 4th. The association decide after taking into consideration the action of the referee that the Hereford City Club be cautioned as to the future conduct of their spectators, and also ordered them to put up caution notices around their ground.

The Junior Cup draw resulted as follows: Burley Gate or Ledbury Town v Leominster Constitutional or Tenbury or Leintwardine; Clehonger v Stretton Juniors; Tram Inn or Birch v Much Marcle; Ludlow Town v King's Acre or 'Hereford Times'; Tram Inn or Birch United or Much Marcle v Cwm Albion or Hereford Thistle.

There was no Hereford United in 1910.

Season Tickets - A Solution?

We have to assume that the club do want to sell season tickets as opposed to having people pay on the gate. The fact that they have offered very good prices "on the day" for the youngest sector, suggests that they have a policy to attract young supporters. Also, it has to be born in mind that revenues need to be increased not just maintained.

So, how about we make the advantage of buying a season ticket more attractive by slightly increasing the on the gate price and making the purchase of ST's available on an easy payment scheme. A second half season ticket should also be available before Christmas (presents). It also strikes me that the early purchase tickets (24 hours before) just makes extra work....either buy a season ticket or pay on the gate!

On the gate prices 08/09

Terrace/Seat
U10 £5/£6
Conc. £10/£12
Adult £14/£16

Season Ticket (includes 1st round Carling/FA Cups + final PSF)

Terrace/Seat
U10 £80/£100 {10 payments of £8.72/£10.90}
Conc. £190/£235 (£120/£150 prior to 20th June) {10 payments of £20.71/£25.62}
Adults £280/£320 (£250/£190 prior to 20th June) {10 payments of £30.52/£34.88}

Half Season Ticket valid for last 12 games £40/£95/£140 (available in Nov/Dec)

For example: - 1 adult attending 23 home games plus two first round matches would pay (@ £14) £350 on the gate. On this system, an early-bird would cost £250, a normal season ticket £280 or an easy payment total of £305.20. Easy payment schemes would have to be signed up and cleared by the finance company by 30th June.

Would need to work on Family Ticket prices and no doubt this hastily thought out scheme has overlooked something obvious but it seems to cover most of the complaints!

One or two trialists have impressed says Turner

Graham Turner has said that he has made two offers to players in recent days and hoped a signing might happen before the weekend.

"One or two have caught the eye. I've made an offer to a couple of players this week, one to a player who has been with us through the week, and one from another club," said Turner as reported by the Official Site.

"We're hoping that something will materialise, and I think we're fairly close to the trialist, we're almost in agreement so I would expect him to sign before the weekend."

Turner also revealed that striker Theo Robinson had returned to Watford for treatment on a knee injury. He hoped he would return to Edgar Street next week.

Meanwhile Turner has spoken about tomorrow's friendly to the Worcester News.

"We are looking at trialists who will take part in the game. It's about match practice for the players. We need to start getting match sharpness.

"There's probably going to be 10 recognisable names for West Brom so it's going to be a strong side. We won at Bath on Tuesday which, with respect to Pegasus, was our first competitive game."

West Brom squad for Bulls friendly

The following list of West Bromwich players who are expected to travel to Edgar Street tomorrow been released by Hereford United:

Luke Daniels
Luke Steele
Paul Robinson
David Worrall
Richard Chaplow
Darren Carter
Stuart Nicholson
Sherjill MacDonald
Nathan Ellington
Martin Albrechtsen
Ronnie Wallwork
Mike Nardiello
Scott Mason
Steffan Morrison
Joss Labadie
Adrian Manchester

As regards the Hereford side, Ben Smith is expected to return but Dean Beckwith will miss out following his head injury at Bath.

Squad numbers announced by club

Hereford United have announced the squad numbers for those players signed on to date:

1. Wayne Brown
2. Trent McClenahan
4. Richard Rose
5. John McCombe
6. Karl Broadhurst
8. Ben Smith
9. Steve Guinan
10. Kris Taylor
11. Clint Easton
15. Sam Gwynne
17. Jordan Fitzpatrick
18. Marcus Palmer
21. Luke Webb
28. Dean Beckwith

Confusion over Child's season tickets

How well sales of season tickets at Hereford United are going hasn't been revealed but because of some confusion over the cost of a child's season ticket sales look unlikely to break any records.

The problem appears to be that a child's season ticket costs £224 in most of the stand area and £180 on the terraces. However match tickets can be purchased at £7 and £6 respectively.

Hereford play 23 home League games. So to pay £224 for a child's seated season ticket will cost £63 more than paying on the gate. As regards the terraces the difference is £42. 23 games at £6 is £138 against £180 for a child's standing season ticket.

In essence buying a season ticket for a child isn't worthwhile unless the supporters sit in the family stand.

(Under 10's can watch Hereford United for just £3 provided the ticket is purchased at the same time as an adults and at least the day before the game)

Meanwhile Shrewsbury Town have sold over 2300 season tickets and with two more weeks before League games start could sell another 200 or so more.

There's little doubt that their new stadium will have helped their sales but to have sold approximately half of their usual gate in season tickets is commendable.

Merton Meadow flooded again

The Merton Meadow car park, next to the Edgar Street home of Hereford United, has begun to flood again.

There has been heavy rain in the area this morning and the Hereford Council are advising motorists to move their cars.

UPDATE 4.30pm: The flooding is said not to be as bad as last weekend and should not have any bearing on tomorrow's friendly against West Bromwich.

Help send Danny on Holiday

There is a concert to help local entertainer/eccentric Danny Lee at the Welsh Club in Hereford at 7.30pm tomorrow evening. Danny is in Birmingham hospital and the aim is to raise money to send him on holiday.

Danny Lee is well-known around Hereford and Edgar Street.

Perhaps his greatest feat was to walk a mile with pint of beer balanced on his head.
Also, of course, he sung the Hereford United tune.

Agents Get No Cash From Bulls

The Football League have published their latest findings on the payments of agents, with the Bulls again not paying an agent.

The Bulls are one of 13 League Two clubs to refuse agents fees, with 19 club in the entire Football League not paying the fees. Overall, the use of agents rose slightly, costing the Football League nearly £1million extra in fees than the previous season.

Peterboro were, unsurprisingly, the highest spenders on agents with a total cost of £30,000 for their 37 player movements since January. The Bulls registered 14 player 'transactions', with nine being cancelled contracts, two new signings (Thomas and Smith), and three loans.

News Round Up

Conference new boys Farsley Celtic are proposing a name change to include the Leeds name. The borough of Leeds, six miles from the city centre, has proposed the options of FC Leeds and Leeds Celtic. Leeds United themselves are still awaiting answers on whether they can continue following their recent problems, with their Football League 'share' yet to be allocated.

Barnet have agreed £125,000 compensation with Charlton for midfielder Dean Sinclair. It brings the total cash banked from sales by the Bees to £500,000 in little more than a month in addition to the £200,000 received for Tresor Kandol last season. Lincoln have ended their interest in Darlington's Julian Joachim after refusing to pay a fee for the 32 year old.

Former Stockport manager Danny Bergara has died after suffering a series of strokes. The Uruguayan had six successful years at the club, and had recently been scouting for Sunderland. Mansfield have confirmed that triallist Matt Piper has decided to retire after failing to secure full fitness following a string of knee injuries.

Kidderminster have signed striker Matthew Barnes-Homer on a one year deal after a successful trial. Barnes-Homer had a trial for the Bulls in late 2004 following his release by Wolves. Shrewsbury boss Gary Peters has ordered the groundstaff to make their new pitch as big as Wembleys' surface, with Peters saying: "It is a pitch for good wingers and hopefully that will be a good ploy for us."

Guinan 33/1 For Top Scorer

Steve Guinan has been ranked as a 33/1 shot to be the League Two top scorer for the coming season.

He is, unsurprisingly, the only Bulls name in the list considering the current lack of signed strikers. Former Bull Alan Connell is rated as a 50/1 shot with new club Brentford.

Peterboro striker Craig Mackail-Smith, who scored eight times in 15 games last season for the Posh, is the 12/1 favourite with Wycombe's Jermaine Easter on 14/1. Transfer listed Posh striker Danny Crow is joint third favourite despite not being in the first team picture at London Road.

The Bulls are ranked at 16/1 for a top-3 finish, and a best-price 11/1 for promotion, but 13/2 sixth favourites for relegation.

For the opening day match the Bulls are slight favourites with 6/4 available on a Bulls win, 7/4 with Rotherham, or 9/4 for the draw.

No Open Day This Sunday

There will not be an Open Day at Edgar Street this coming Sunday says the Hereford Times this morning. No reason has been given.

Also in the paper manager Graham Turner looks forward to the visit of Wolves next Wednesday.

"Wolves have a first-team squad of 30 so those players who do not get much of a chance at Northampton are likely to do so at Edgar Street."

Turner mentioned the flood situation last weekend.

"We had been told that the floodwater was likely to reach as far as the Legends Bar on Saturday morning but, nevertheless, when we arrived the groundstaff we cutting the pitch," he explained.

The absence of Ben Smith at Bath on Tuesday evening was due to an 'over-enthusiastic tackle' by Sam Gwynne in training.

West Brom visit Edgar Street on Friday

West Bromwich Albion will be the visitors to Edgar Street on Friday evening for the first home friendly of the pre-season for Hereford United.

It will be the fifth friendly for the Baggies. They are set to play Northampton this evening. For Hereford it will be their third friendly and the first against League opposition. At present it is uncertain how strong a team manager Tony Mowbray will send to Edgar Street but with recent transfer activity there could be several top class players on show.

The Baggies have been in the transfer market this week with the expected signing from Luton of defender Leon Barnett and possibly Stoke defender, Carl Hoefkens. They have already signed Craig Beattie, Shelton Martis and Filipe Teixeira. However their captain Curtis Davies could be about to move to Newcastle and Jason Koumas and Diomansy Kamara have already moved to new clubs.

Striker Kevin Philips is one player who might feature at Edgar Street. He has been suffering with hamstring injury.

For Hereford, Graham Turner, is expected to have another look at several trialists including Lionel Ainsworth who is understood to be considering an offer, Joe Hutchinson, 'keeper Adam Collins, Simon Johnson and Chris Zebroski.

To date Hereford United have the following fourteen players signed: Smith, Brown, McClenahan, Beckwith, Broadhurst, Rose, Webb, Taylor, Guinan, McCombe, Gwynne, Fitzpatrick, Easton, and Palmer.

The game starts at 7.45pm and admission is £8 for Adults and £4 for concessions to any part of the ground.

Supporters will remember a friendly against West Brom several seasons ago when the visitors brought a team comprised of several pros and a few youngsters. Tamika Mkandawire, who later joined Hereford, was one of the youngsters playing that evening in July 2003.

Jamie Price at Swansea

Hereford born Jamie Price is on trial at Swansea.

Price, aged 18, was recently released by Birmingham and is hopeful of being invited onto the Swans pre-season tour of Holland.

Dubbed as the next Robbie Savage because of his looks Price has played on the wing for the Welsh under 19's.

"I just want a chance to prove what I can do," he told the Evening Post.

"It was disappointing to leave Birmingham, but saying that they have just been promoted to the Premiership and I want to be playing first-team football now.

"I've been playing left-back for Swansea even though I'm a central midfielder or left winger, but I don't mind at all as long as I'm involved."

Price played for Birmingham at Edgar Street in a friendly last year. He went out on loan to Tamworth earlier this year.

Hutchinson on trial with Bulls last night

Defender Joey Hutchinson, an ex Darlington player, came on for the Bulls last night.

Hutchinson was born at Middlesborough in April 1982 so is now 25. He started his career with the Birmingham City Academy and made his debut in a Worthington Cup game in 2000. However, although he was still under contract he was released in the summer of 2003.

He then joined Darlington and, at the time, was said to be 'solid, tough tackling and committed.' He played over 80 times for the North East club.

Unfortunately Hutchinson suffered injury problems, said to be cruciate ligament related, and was released by Darlington last New Year.

One Darlington fan posted this message about Hutchinson on the Hereford United Independent Forum:

He's only played 30 odd games since 2003/04, when he was our captain. He actually snapped his cruciate in one leg and missed the rest of the season that year, came back the following season, played a handful of matches and then snapped the cruciate in his other leg...and missed the rest of that season. Came back the following season, played a handful of games, looked rusty and kept on picking up various pulls and strains. Back on the physio table. We then released him at Christmas, to bring in players that would be fit instead, and he's been trying to regain fitness ever since.

News Round Up

Chester have transfer listed utility player Sean Hessey, the second player to be told he is not in manager Bobby Williamson's plans. The club have signed veteran defender Paul Butler, the former Leeds and Wolves player, on a one year deal.

Aldershot have cancelled a proposed friendly match with Millwall due to the Policing cost presented by Hampshire Police. Oxford cannot sign any new players due to the Conference wage capping rules. Boss Jim Smith is still looking at several triallists but will have to offload players first.

MK Dons have signed Chester striker Drewe Broughton on a free transfer. Broughton, 28, spent the bulk of his time at Chester on loan with Boston. Bradford have signed teenage Everton defender Scott Phelan on a free transfer and taken Thomas Harban on loan from Barnsley. Notts County have signed Lee Canoville from Boston after a move to MK Dons collapsed following Martin Allen's departure as manager.

Cheltenham have moved Saturday's friendly with Wolves to Kidderminster due to water problems at Whaddon Road. Bury have signed goalkeeper Jim Provett and midfielder Ben Leonard on one year deals. Provett joins after rejecting a new deal at Hartlepool, while Leonard signs his first pro contract after being spotted playing Northern Counties League football.

Narrow victory for United

Hereford United recorded their second pre-season victory over Blue Square South opponents Bath City at Twerton Park this evening. The only goal of the game came from trialist Simon Johnson mid-way through the second half. Before the strike, the game was a poor affair with little action at either end but the goal lifted The Bulls and the final twenty minutes or so was far better.

The line up included three trialists, Lionel Ainsworth and Chris Zebroski, both who featured at Pegasus, and also Johnson, the former Leeds youngster and more recently of Darlington. There was one notable absentee though, with Ben Smith missing completely from the side. The captains armband was taken by Karl Broadhurst, partnered in defence by Dean Beckwith.

The first half was nothing short of dire though, as United struggled to string passes together. Kris Taylor's wild free-kick was the closest The Bulls came to opening the scoring, whilst at the other end, Beckwith blocked a fierce shot, deflecting out for a corner. The best move of the half came near the end, when Steve Guinan, Zebroski and Ainsworth linked up, with the little winger racing into the box, but his shot was weak and caused the 'keeper no harm. Zebroski's turn and powerful shot was also met by the 'keeper late on in the period. Beckwith went off late on with a knock, and was replaced by John McCombe.

With the poor showing in mind, substitutions were made with Wayne Brown being replaced by Adam Collin. Karl Broadhurst made way for another trialist, a central defender Hutchinson. Jordan Fitzpatrick took the place of Luke Webb, and up front, Guinan left the field with recent signing Clint Easton getting his opportunity to shine.

The second half started much like the first half with little in the way of goal-mouth action. After twenty minutes Marcus Palmer was introduced in place of Chris Zebroski and then the game started to come into life. It was Easton's blocked volley that was the nearest the ball came to threatening the net before Johnson took his chance to give United the lead. The praise should go to Ainsworth though, superb quick feet, and a neat through ball let in Johnson, who shot under the keeper to score the opener. The goal breathed confidence into the Hereford side, and finally, we saw some signs of the way the team could play. Easton tried his luck twice in quick succesion, with the second time, forcing the Bath 'keeper into a decent save whilst Johnson linked up with Ainsworth once again; the former Derby man firing across goal and wide. Sam Gwynne came on for Kris Taylor late on, before Richard Rose nearly capped his evening with a fine goal, powerfully bursting through but his drilled shot was beaten away by the sub Bath keeper.

373 fans were present with perhaps 60 fans from Hereford cheering on the side, and they witnessed a close game. However, after the goal from Johnson, there was a new found confidence in the side and the play was quicker and crisper. In particular, Ainsworth impressed again with his ability to beat defenders at speed, whilst Johnson looked a completely different player after his goal. The first half was frustrating for him, but the second half, he was full of running and constantly beat defenders, with pace and quick feet. Graham Turner's latest signing Easton looked very assured on the ball, and showed some nice touches when drifting in from the left wing. His experience could be vital for this coming season. Next up is West Brom on Friday; this shall be a real test of the current playing squad and trialists.

Hereford: Brown, McClenahan, Beckwith, Broadhurst, Rose, Ainsworth, Webb, Taylor, Johnson, Guinan, Zebroski.

Subs: Collin, Hutchinson, McCombe, Gwynne, Fitzpatrick, Easton, Palmer.

Trialist nets Bulls win

Hereford United won 1-0 at non league Bath City thanks to a Simon Johnson goal. Full report later.

Wolves to send reserves to Edgar Street

Wolverhampton Wanderers have confirmed that they will send their 'reserves' to play Hereford United next Wednesday evening, August 1st.

UPDATE WED: Wolves now say that should their friendly game with Cheltenham this weekend be cancelled they may bring a stronger squad to Edgar Street next Wednesday.

FURTHER UPDATE WED: The friendly due to take place at Cheltenham has been moved to Kidderminster.

Bath City to help Gloucester

Bath City, who play Hereford United this evening at the Twerton Stadium, have agreed with flood-stricken Gloucester City to move the friendly between the two clubs due to take place on Friday to Twerton Park as the Gloucester ground is under 8 feet of water. The Meadow Park has been flooded twice before since it was set up seventeen years ago.

In a suberb gesture Bath have said that they will give all the gate receipts less expenses to Gloucester to help them recover from the flood problems.

Perhaps Hereford United could arrange a friendly with Gloucester and help them out as well. It would be very good PR for the Bulls.

Meanwhile Bath City are expected to have former Cardiff City striker Kyle Bassett in their squad this evening along with several other trialists.

"At the moment we're just giving everyone a game. We're not half way through our pre-season, we're trying to make our mind up about some of the squad members. Then next week the team will be closer to our starting XI," said assistant manager Adie Britton.

Bath may take some interest in Hereford's Marcus Palmer who was to go on-loan to Bath towards the end of last season.

New signing Clint Easton is expected to be in the Hereford party travelling to Bath along with several trialists including, it is believed, two players not seen at Pegasus last Wednesday.

Former Bulls shine at Macclesfield

Three players who have played for Hereford United took at least some part in Macclesfield's friendly with Derby County yesterday which the Silkmen won 1-0.

The winning goal came from Danny Thomas with a 'stunning 20 yard drive' after just five minutes.

At the start of the second half Matt Baker took over in goal and towards the end made a 'suberb double save'.

Michael Husbands also played for 30 minutes.

Close-by at Tranmere Steve Jennings appears to have staked his claim for a place in their squad for the forth-coming season. Jennings was loaned to Hereford United to help him regain fitness late last season.

"This is a big year for me. I am out of contract next summer and I want to give myself the best opportunity I can to play this season and show people what I can do," he said.

"It is important to make a positive impression in these pre-season games."

Alternative Route to Bath

Bath City Football Club have suggested an alternative route for Hereford United supporters travelling to Twerton Park for tomorrow evening's friendly.

Exit M4 at junction 19 for the M32. Follow the lane signposted A4174 leaving the M32 at the first junction you come to. Turn left at the roundabout at the bottom of the slip road.

Continue on the ring road until you reach a roundabout where the A4 joins the A4174 ring road. The A4 will be signposted Bath.

Turn left at this roundabout and go along a dual carriageway until the next roundabout. Go straight across this roundabout and go through Saltford until you reach another roundabout. Take the second exit going past the Globe pub. Proceed up a hill and down the other side where there is a left hand turn at the bottom, signposted Twerton.

Take this turn and proceed for about 1 mile. Entrance to the stadium is on the right, the access road being next to Blockbuster Video Store.

Bath City recommend this junction, even for teams coming from the East, as it avoids the laborious task of driving through the centre of Bath.

Finally Bath City have said that, as of this evening, the pitch is in excellent condition. They haven't had anything like the amount of rain that has fallen further to the north.

Willo to turn Scotland with Rovers

Andy Williams has been included in the Bristol Rovers squad travelling to Scotland for three friendlies.

The former Hereford United striker has the chance to play in games at Dunfermline, Cowdenbeath and Airdie.

Meanwhile at Aberystwyth the Hereford United under 14 team defeated Ipswich Town 8-1.

Gloucester pitch under water

Gloucester Football Club is currently uner eight feet of water and the level is expected to rise another few inches.

Gloucester play at the Meadow Park and are managed by Tim Harris. Several of their players were at the Pegasus friendly against Hereford United last Wednesday.

The club are due to play a friendly against Bath City next Friday.

Wolves to visit for friendly

Wolverhampton Wanderers are to visit Edgar Street on Wednesday August 1st for a friendly. The Championship club have stepped in to help Hereford United whose friendly against Bristol City was cancelled last Saturday.

It is uncertain how strong a squad Wolves will bring as they have a friendly at Northampton the previous evening.

Admission charges will be £8 for adults and £4 for children for all those areas of the ground that are open that evening.

The game will kick-off at 7.45pm.

News Round Up

Chester midfielder Glen Cronin is mulling over retirement after breaking a metatarsal for the third time in a year. The former Exeter man, 25, played just four times for his current club last season due to the same problem.

Accrington have confirmed the signing of former Wrexham striker Lee McEvilly on a free transfer. McEvilly spent a season at Stanley in the Conference, scoring 17 in 41 appearances. Barnet striker Guiliano Grazioli has had knee surgery that will rule him out for at least a month, and will miss the Bulls' trip to Underhill in mid-August.

Brentford have signed Ipswich's teenage defender Sammy Moore on an initial one month loan. Moore, 19, has made a solitary substitute appearance for the Ipswich first team.

Admission charges for Bath Friendly

Bath City have published the admission charges for tomorrow's friendly with Hereford United.

Terrace: £8 adults, £5 OAP/Students, £3.50 U16's
Stand: £9.50, £6.50 & £4.50 respectively.

As at lunchtime today the game is set to go ahead despite patchy rain this morning.

There is a car park and parking on roads nearby.

Johnson Confirmed As Triallist

Former Leeds midfielder/forward Simon Johnson has been confirmed as a triallist at Edgar Street.

West Bromich born Johnson, 24, spent three years as a pro at Leeds - mainly gaining experience in five seperate loan spells throughout the divisions. He managed a small number of Premiership appearances at Elland Road, and was the reserves top scorer in the 03/04 season, before his 2005 release brought a move to Darlington.

He scored nine times for the club in two years, barely making an appearance in the second half of last season as new manager Dave Penney moulded his own side. He recently had a trail at Bradford, with Bantams boss Stuart McCall telling the local press: "He is different to what we've got, he can get down the sides of people."

Hereford United's Youth team are travelling to Aberystwyth for the Welsh Tournament which starts tomorrow. The event used to be known as the Ian Rush tournament.

Bath Chaps?

Formed over 100 years ago Bath City have been one of the top non-league sides in Britain. During the 2nd World War they became the only non-league club to win a league title and since then have twice won the old Southern League, only missing out on election to the Football League by a few votes in 1978. They were Southern League opponents of the Bulls in the "Newcastle" year and in early April '72, a gate of 6708 watched United defeat Bath 2-1 at Edgar Street. Interestingly, the highest home League gate that season came when 7639 witnessed the 3-1 defeat of Merthyr Tydfil.

This coming season will see Bath City compete in The Conference South at their Twerton Park headquarters. Twerton Park is an older style ground, it's been there for about 70 years, and is large for a club at this level. Bristol Rovers ground shared in the 80s & 90s. The ground capacity is 8,840. There are two stands, which hold 790 & 236, uncovered terraces behind each goal and covered terracing everywhere else. Away fans generally stand at the "Bristol" end (the western end) and if there is segregation they get that area and the smaller stand. Bulls News is not aware of the admission costs for this game.

By Car: - You have a choice of using the route via Gloucester, the M5 and the M4 or alternatively, crossing the Severn Bridge on the M4 via Monmouth. In either case, to avoid Bristol traffic you are advised to stay on the M4 until J18 then travel south on the A46 through Cold Aston following signs for Bath. Entering Bath, branch left onto the A4 (sign Bath, Warminster) and then at Cleveland Place bear left onto Cleveland Place East (A36 sign through traffic). Turn right at the lights into Sydney Place (sign through traffic) then continue on the A36 following signs for Bristol passing the Express/Holiday Inn. At Windsor Bridge, continue forward and at the lights turn left onto High Street (sign Twerton). The Twerton Park postcode is BA2 1DB. Distance Approx. 70 miles. Allow up to two hours.

Plenty of Pubs in Bath city centre but near to the ground is The White Horse in Shophouse Road, which appears to receive reasonable reports while The Full Moon and The Old Crown are in the Twerton High Street.

Enjoy.

Millers Open Up With Defensive Problems

The Bulls opening day opponents, Rotherham United, opened up their pre-season campaign with a 5-4 loss to Altrincham.

The match left manager Mark Robins admitting that his defenders had not performed. The Millers fielded a team with eight new signings, and changed virtually the entire side on the hour mark. They took the lead three times in the opening half-hour but Alty, featuring ex-Bulls Chris Lane and Jake Sedgemore, came back each time.

Robins told their official site: "Obviously you don't want to concede that many goals but we have worked mainly on attacking play so far and haven't done anything defensively.

"Having said that it was naïve and although we have emphasised the attacking play we've got to be able to cope with that. We have had one or two words and it shouldn't happen again."

The Millers took around 250 fans to Altrincham and are expected to travel to Edgar Street in good numbers. They have already been told that the match will be pay on the day.

In other friendly news, Macclesfield and Stoke played out a 1-1 draw with ex-Bull Danny Thomas providing the cross for the Macc goal. Matt Baker, Michael Husbands, and John Eustace also featured in the game.

Bulls could receive £69,000 from Premier League

Hereford United and all the other League Two clubs are to receive an average £69,000 a year for three years thanks to a decision from the Premier League to give a part of their Television receipts to other clubs.

The deal called a 'solidarity package' is expected to be worth around £90 million over the next three seasons.

However the amount is still a pittance compared with the £1.7 billion the Premier League receives from their deals with Sky and Setanta.

What each club actually receives depends on their performance. According to the Times 'each Championship club will get an extra £912,000, ranging from £1.38m to £776,000 according to performance. League One clubs will receive an additional £103,000 and in League Two the average is £69,000.'

The money will be in additional that that received by Hereford United from the Football League which is £265,000 per season.

It is understood that some of the money is for youth developmemt. Although the amount isn't made clear, it could be worth £25,000 per year, again for three seasons. Another portion of the money is for 'community programmes'.

Flooding around Edgar Street

Hereford United had good reason to cancel this afternoon's friendly as this picture, courtesy of Ivan, shows the flooding in the Merton Meadow car park.

Merton Meadow is the closest park to Edgar Street and is usually close to full on match days.

The river Wye has broken its banks in several places around Hereford but should peak later this evening or early tomorrow morning.

Jeannin's corners help Oxford

Former Hereford United defender Alex Jeannin helped his new club Oxford United to a 3-1 win against Didcot this afternoon.

Two corners from Jeannin in the second half found Robery Duffy who scored two goals for Qxford. Earlier a decent cross from Jeannin had met Pettefer who headed narrowly wide.

Jeannin took corners from both sides.

Meanwhile there was no sign of Simon Travis, another ex-Hereford United player, at Oxford this afternoon. It had been reported that he was on trial at the club but this has since been discounted.

Finally another former Bull Andy Williams played for all of the second period in Bristol Rovers 5-2 defeat of Bath City last night.

Saturday August 4th Cheltenham home 3.00pm.

Meanwhile no decision have been announced by the club regarding the annual Open Day. Normally this takes place at Edgar Street on the last Sunday in July.

Decision on Friendly awaited - GAME OFF

Hereford United are set to make a decision about whether this afternoon's friendly against Bristol City goes ahead shortly.

UPDATE 9am: GAME OFF

This from Hereford United:

Although the newly laid Edgar Street pitch had stood up well to the constant downpour, the club want to protect it as much as they can, and combined with the poor weather conditions that have left travelling into Herefordshire vitually impossible, there was no choice but to cancel the game

Whilst the rain has eased, roads around Herefordshire remain difficult in some areas. The River Wye has peaked at Hay-on-Wye and is not expected to cause serious flooding in Herefordshire.

Currently (9am) there is a Flood Watch on the River Wye from Hay-on-Wye to Hereford and a Flood Warning from Hereford to Ross.

News Round Up

A large number of friendlies have been axed due to the weather. Darlington have moved their match with Gretna to the Scottish club's ground, while a dozen other friendlies involving League Two sides have been shelved after torrential rain made most pitches unplayable.

Crawley have been given an extension until the end of October to settle their CVA. The owners have still failed to finance the settlement, with a £1million-valued flat due for auction before the end of September. Bizarrely CVA supervisor Rob Sadler was given a standing ovation at the end of the creditors meeting, that saw just one creditor object to the extension.

Bulls target Marcus Browning is to feature for Weymouth in their friendly against Bournemouth, but is yet to agree terms with the club. Wrexham striker Lee McEvilly has left the club with immediate effect after the final year of his contract was cancelled by mutual consent.

Macclesfield have signed former Chester defender Luke Dimech on a 12 month contract. The Maltese international returns to English football after a year away from the English league. Former Bulls striker Andy Moran is one step away from the second round of the UEFA Cup after scoring one of the goals in Rhyl's 3-1 win over FC Haka.

The Times have published their list of the 50 worst footballers to grace the Premiership. Of note to Bulls fans and League Two are Darren Ferguson (30), Jason Lee (19), and Ade Akinbiyi (15).

Baker has trial at Macclesfield

Goalkeeper Matt Baker is on trial with the Silkmen. He played in their 1-1 draw with Stoke this evening.

Baker played for Hereford United for four seasons from August 2000 then moved to Wrexham for a spell before moving on to MK Dons, Weymouth and Rushden and Diamonds.

Tomorrow's Friendly in doubt

Hereford United released the following statement about 3pm:

With the new pitch standing up well, there were not too many worries over whether or not the pitch will be playable for tomorrows planned friendly against Bristol City. However with the flooding to the Merton Meadow Car park getting worse by the minute, and bad travelling conditions in and around Herefordshire the game may be in doubt.

The BBC Picture shows the problems in Merton Meadow.

The club say they will decide tomorrow morning whether the game will go ahead.

Meanwhile Kidderminster's home game tomorrow has been cancelled as has the game at Worcester.

McIndoe Reflects On Bulls Stint

Michael McIndoe has spoken to the official Bristol City website about his time at Edgar Street:

"I enjoyed it there and feel I did reasonably well. I had a good relationship with the fans when I was there but obviously there are some who were disappointed to see me leave.

"I don't think I've ever gone back to a club and received a good reception, but that's football. I've been back to Hereford a few times since leaving the club and I appreciate the fans who know football and welcomed me back. Hereford have got a great manager in charge in Graham Turner. He owns the club as well so he's done a terrific job over the years really. They're a progressive club who I can see going places in the next few seasons."

Heavy rain over Herefordshire this morning

Seldom has pre-season at Hereford United seen so much rain. Another 25 mls has fallen since 8am this morning bringing this months total to around 125 mls or five inches. And more is forecast for this afternoon.

This time last year Herefordshire was having excellent weather with temperatures in the high 20's Centigrade. If anything the ground conditions were too dry for football.

The pitch at Edgar Street was relaid during May. It has grown well and hopefully will be sufficiently established to cope with the recent rains. But tomorrow will not only be a test for the players but also for the pitch to see how well it copes with the current unseasonal weather.

Meanwhile as at 11.30am, the Merton Meadow car park, which adjoins the football ground, is partly flooded. Council staff are asking those with cars parked towards the lower end to move them.

Willo creates only Bristol goal - Jeannin "comfortable on the ball"

Bristol Rovers played Oxford this afternoon in a "behind closed doors" friendly at Bisham Abbey. The game was played over three periods with Williams featuring in the first period and being credited with playing in Lewis Haldene to score. Willo played in his favoured central striking role and is said to have showed good control. Oxford equalised in the third period through a Rob Duffy penalty. It has been noted that Ryan Green was missing from the Bristol party.

For Oxford, Alex Jeannin is said to have been "to the fore" and looked comfortable on the ball at left back. There was no mention of Simon Travis who is reported to be on trial with Jim Smith's outfit. Meanwhile, the Official Oxford website is currently showing a large photo of AJ at Leicester brandishing a "We're going up" flag!

Easton Signs Two Year Deal

Hereford United have confirmed that Clint Easton has signed a contract with the club.

The two year deal means the Bulls now have five of their 14 contracted players signed up for the 2008/9 season.
