Stevenage Rebrand

Stevenage Borough have rebranded for their Football League entry.

The club will drop the Borough part of their name as they enter the League, citing the club's original name when it was formed in 1894 - only that club went bust some time ago.

The current Stevenage was formed in 1976 after the, then, Stevenage Athletic went bust. They added the Borough monicker in 1980 after the local council handed them current ground Broadhall Way after fully refurbishing it. Current chairman Phil Wallace says the club is returning to it's roots, telling their official site that they are, apparently, embarrassed by the name:

"Looking to the future, the directors do not believe the connotation of the word Borough in the name should be carried into the Football League. It’s served us well as a non-league club in the climb up the non-league pyramid and we shall always be ‘The Boro’ in recognition of our roots, but now it’s time to look to the future."

The move comes after fans voted for 'the Boro' to be their nickname. Both the FA and Football League are reported to have accepted the name change.
